Ten small, spooky tattoo ideas, the styles that suit them, and what to know about pricing, walk-ins, and aftercare before you book.

Halloween is the one time of year when a ghost, a skull, or a black cat on your skin feels completely on theme. It’s also a great excuse to finally get that small tattoo you’ve been thinking about.

Small, spooky designs are some of the most popular first tattoos and add-ons we see at Legacy Tattoo in southeast Calgary. They’re simple, they’re fun, and many of them are quick enough to get done in one short visit.

Here are 10 ideas to get you started, plus what to know before you book.

10 Spooky Tattoo Ideas That Work Well at Small Sizes

  • Ghost: A tiny, friendly ghost is a classic. It looks great as a simple outline, or with a little shading for a softer feel.
  • Black cat: Sleek, mysterious, and easy to personalize. A black cat can be a quiet nod to Halloween or a tribute to your own pet.
  • Skull: Timeless and endlessly adaptable. Keep it minimal in fineline, or go bolder with traditional lines and shading.
  • Bat: Small, graphic, and a natural fit for wrists, ankles, behind the ear, or along the collarbone.
  • Spider and web: A delicate web can sit in an elbow, shoulder, or the corner of a larger piece, and a lone spider works on its own.
  • Jack-o’-lantern: Playful and instantly recognizable. Traditional style suits it well with bold outlines and strong colour.
  • Moon and witch hat: A crescent moon paired with a pointed hat or a few stars is simple, elegant, and a little magical.
  • Haunted house: A small illustrative haunted house makes a great detailed piece for a forearm or calf.
  • Skeleton hand: Reaching, waving, or holding something unexpected. It’s a fun placement for a forearm or the side of a finger.
  • Potion bottle or mushroom: Moody, whimsical, and a good option if you want something spooky that still feels subtle all year round.

Match Your Idea to the Right Tattoo Style

The same design can look completely different depending on the style. A ghost can be a delicate single line or a bold, colourful traditional piece, and both are valid.

  • Fineline and minimalist: Best for ghosts, bats, moons, and delicate webs. See our fineline tattoos.
  • Traditional: Best for skulls, jack-o’-lanterns, and bold spooky icons. See our traditional tattoos.
  • Illustrative: Best for haunted houses, potion bottles, and scenes with more detail.
  • Pet and floral work: A good fit if you want a black cat that actually looks like your own.

Walk-In or Book Ahead for Halloween?

Both options are available. Walk-ins are first-come, first-served during opening hours and usually work best for smaller designs and flash pieces.

If you want something custom, such as a specific style, a certain placement, or a design built around your own idea, booking ahead gives your artist time to draw it properly. It’s also the safer choice for Halloween week, when the studio tends to be busier.

What Does a Small Halloween Tattoo Cost?

Small, simple pieces are usually priced at our $150 shop minimum rather than by the hour. Hourly rates are $130 with a junior artist and $160–$200 with a senior artist.

If you want an easy, low-commitment way to get started, we also offer $99 tiny tattoos every Tuesday and Thursday. For a real number on your own idea, get in touch and we’ll give you a straightforward quote.

Planning a Halloween Night Out? Read This First

A fresh tattoo and a night of costumes and parties don’t always mix. A few quick rules will keep your new ink looking its best.

  • Be sober for your appointment: No exceptions. Alcohol can thin your blood and affect how ink settles, so save the celebrating for after.
  • Give it some distance from the party: Crowds, tight costumes, and sweaty dance floors are rough on healing skin. Booking a few days before Halloween helps.
  • Keep costume makeup and face paint off it: Anything scented, heavy, or hard to wash off should stay away from a fresh tattoo.
  • Cover it loosely: Choose a costume that doesn’t rub or squeeze the tattooed area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a Halloween tattoo on Halloween itself?

Yes. Legacy Tattoo is open Thursday through Tuesday, 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, so we’re open on Saturday, October 31. Walk-ins are first-come, first-served, so arriving early is a good idea.

How long will a small spooky tattoo take?

Small and simple designs are often under an hour, including setup. Your artist will give you a clearer estimate once they see your idea and placement.

Do I need to bring ID?

Yes. You must be 18 with valid ID. Clients under 18 need written parental consent and must be at least 16 years of age.

Will it still look good after Halloween?

Absolutely. Most of these designs aren’t tied to one holiday. A ghost, cat, moon, or skull works any day of the year.
